Monday-Friday: 48-minute classes

Objectives:
1) Label a map of Africa.
2) Describe the events surrounding the independence of the new nations in Africa.
3) Examine everyday life in Africa.
4) Analyze problems in Africa.
5) Demonstrate the enormity of AIDS in Africa.

Essential Question:
By 1800, England had lost its American colonies and France was torn by a violent revolution. Yet, by 1900, Western Europe and the U.S. had worldwide empires, a dominance which continues to this day. What factors brought Western Europe and the U.S. to this world-power status and what were the domestic and worldwide responses to these changes?

Monday:
1) Focus Question: Please name one country in Africa.
2) List/Group/Label: Africa
3) Close Activity: Geography Activity-Labeling a map of Africa.
Homework:
1) Read and Complete Section Assessment for Chapter 34, Section 3, “New Nations in Africa”, #1-3.

Tuesday:
1) Focus Question: Why did French colonists fight so hard to hold on to Algeria?
2) Structured Notes on Chapter 34, Section 3.
3) Close Activity: Pick a Victim.
Homework:
1) None.

Wednesday:
1) Warm Up: Group Work-In groups, students will read newspaper articles on everyday life in Africa.
2) Close Activity: Students will share what they’ve learned with the class.
Homework:
1) Article and Worksheet “Problems in Africa”.

Thursday:
1) Focus Question: Please name one problem in Africa.
2) Problems in Africa Activity.

3) Close Activity: Please give one possible solution to the problems in Africa.
Homework:
1) None.

Friday:
1) Focus Question: Why is AIDS so prevalent in Africa?
2) National Geographic Activity: Aids in Africa-More Than Sympathy.
3) Close Activity: Any questions?
